Memorial Day landed on May 29th this year. In celebration of this holiday Oatfield Estates had a ceremony at the flagpole. The American flag was placed at half staff until all the residents came out.
Jim (from Hood house) went up with Janelle to raise the flag while beautiful taps were playing in the background. Right after the raising of the flag Jim, who is a veteran, said a quick word about his thoughts, and Meagan (Activities Coordinator) read a touching story about what Memorial Day was all about.
To finish the ceremony we all stood for a moment of silence for the fallen soldiers who risked their lives to protect our country.
“Our nation owes a debt to its fallen heroes that we can never fully repay, but we can honor their sacrifice.” — Barack Obama
This month, Elite Adventures went on a trip to the Alpenrose Opera House to enjoy the Northwest Senior Theater. This theater is simply a non-profit organization consisting of experienced performers that are 55 and over.
The residents enjoyed watching the performers dance, act, and sing. The songs that were performed were classics such as “Talk to the Animals,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and various other nostalgic songs from famous musicals. Our residents, along with the rest of the audience, were joyfully singing along and clapping throughout the performance.
Alice in Wonderland
Residents from all houses joined us as we went to Portland Metro Arts, and enjoyed a wonderful performance of Alice in Wonderland. On the way to the performance we stopped off and got orange juice and breakfast sandwiches, as the performance started at 9:45am. The students all danced and performed well. Residents were clapping and very intrigued.
